About the recipe

I love a classic Italian affogato – basically a scoop of ice cream drowned in espresso – but my kids begged me to make them a version with hot chocolate and it was great. Fill your boots, people, this is a good one. Make it extra classy by serving it up in my Cosy Cuppa mugs from my gorgeous Big Love tableware range.

Ingredients

500g vanilla ice cream

1 litre semi-skimmed milk

3 tablespoons Horlicks powder

3 tablespoons cocoa powder

3 tablespoons soft brown sugar

3 tablespoons orange marmalade

Method

  1. You don’t have to do this, but I find it can be helpful to scoop out 8 balls of ice cream in advance, then pop them back into the freezer on a tray, so it’s already portioned up and ready to go when you come to serve.
  2. Pour the milk into a large pan and bring to a gentle boil over a medium heat, then reduce the heat to low.
  3. Whisk in the Horlicks, cocoa powder, sugar and a pinch of sea salt. Let it simmer for 5 minutes, while you place a ball of ice cream in each of 8 Cosy Cuppa mugs or little bowls.
  4. Divide the orange marmalade between them, then pour over the hot chocolate and enjoy.

Feel free to swap out the marmalade for another preserve of your choice – cherry or apricot jam would work a treat. You can also try adding whisky into the mix for a hot toddy vibe, or a bit of strong espresso as a nod to the traditional affogato.
